WESTMINSTER, Md.–Senior setter
Malia Scott eclipsed the 1,000-dig mark as the Swarthmore College volleyball team (6-5, 2-1 CC) fell 3-1 to the McDaniel College Terror on Saturday, Sep. 23.
The Garnet captured the first set before falling by a 25-17, 21-25, 23-25, 18-25 score in the Centennial Conference matchup.
Scott, needing nine digs to reach the milestone, finished with 21 for the match and 47 assists to complete a double-double. Junior libero
Sarah Girard, who achieved the feat earlier this year, led all players with 31 digs in the match.
Sarah Wallace and
Olivia Leventhal reached double figures in kills with 14 and 10, respectively, and
Emma Morgan-Bennett recorded four solo blocks.
Swarthmore never trailed in the first set and led by as many as nine points.
Emma Morgan-Bennett hit efficiently, with four kills in five swings, and
Mehra den Braven also helped set the tone with five kills and one error in ten attempts to go with five digs in the frame. The Garnet forced a McDaniel timeout at 10-4 and never let the Green Terror within striking distance as the hosts were limited to a .109 hitting percentage for the set. Wallace put Swarthmore ahead, 1-0, with a kill as the Garnet looked to snap McDaniel's nine-match winning streak.
The Green Terror had other ideas and used a 10-1 stretch in the middle of the second frame to establish control. Swarthmore clawed back to get within three, but were unable to get any closer as the hosts took the final two points of the set and locked the match at one apiece.
Neither side conceded any ground in the third frame, which featured 12 ties and four lead changes. A late McDaniel run gave the Terror a 17-13 margin before Swarthmore rallied back and eventually evened the score at 22 all. The hosts took two, forcing game point, and converted the second attempt for a 2-1 lead.
Alice Liu swung four kills in five attempts during the frame as
Sarah Girard anchored the defense with an impressive 15 digs. Neither team hit well in the final frame of the match, but the Green Terror came away with the win, handing Swarthmore its first conference loss of the year.
The volleyball team looks to rebound on Wednesday, Sep. 27 when it hosts Franklin & Marshall at 7 p.m. Wallace, who has 1,371 kills in her career, needs four more to break the program career record set by Genny Pezzola '12.
