Wallace Sets Kills Record As Garnet Sweep Diplomats

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Senior outside hitter Sarah Wallace set the program record for kills on Wednesday, Sep. 27, passing Genny Pezzola '12's previous mark of 1,374 in a 3-0 win over visiting Franklin & Marshall.

Wallace finished the evening with nine kills, as did sophomore Mehra den Braven. Den Braven also chipped in nine digs and libero Sarah Girard led the Garnet in that category with 14 as Guin Mesh had 12. Alyssa Nathan and Malia Scott shared setting duties, finishing with 13 and 11 assists, respectively. Emma Morgan-Bennett registered three blocks to go with five kills and no errors.

Swarthmore established control in the opening frame courtesy of five aces, with two apiece coming from Scott and Mesh. Overall, the team hit .281 and limited the Diplomats to a .036 mark of their own. Swarthmore established a double-digit lead on an ace by den Braven at 19-9 and cruised to a comfortable 25-14 win.

Franklin & Marshall recovered and led 18-12 late in the second. Swarthmore started a run off the Diplomats' service error and Wallace continued the momentum with a record-breaking kill off an overpassed ball. Swarthmore came within two several times, but had its work cut out for them at 22-19 with F&M serving. A timeout helped the Garnet regroup and they tore off a 6-0 run on Wallace's serve to take a 2-0 lead.

Swarthmore pounced on F&M's deflated confidence for a commanding 13-1 advantage to start the third. In the final frame, the hosts committed no errors and swung 10 kills in 30 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. Den Braven sealed the deal with a kill at 24-9 and Swarthmore improved to 3-1 in conference play.

The volleyball team hosts Cabrini, Widener and Oneonta in the Swarthmore Quad Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sep. 29-30.
