Garnet Outlast Green Terror in Shootout Victory

WESTMINSTER, Md.–For the second time already this season, the Swarthmore College field hockey team earned a hard-fought win in a shootout as it prevailed by a 3-2 score over the McDaniel College Green Terror on Saturday, Sep. 23.

The Garnet held a 24-10 advantage in shots on goal and boasted 29-4 margin in penalty corners. Sierra Spencer scored and Clare Perez recorded an assist in regulation before netting the game-winner in the shootout. Freshman Halsey Hutchinson also scored while Zelda Bank made eight saves in the cage. Sophie Peipher finished with five shots on goal and Riya Garg and Ali Baratta combined for seven.

Swarthmore tested the Green Terror keeper early and often, creating opportunities off a series of corners early on. McDaniel, however, scored first with a tally at 27:48 for a 1-0 lead. The Garnet remained on the offense and it was not long before they found the equalizer courtesy of Hutchinson, who tipped in Perez's pass from the right side.

Swarthmore continued its momentum into the second period and put another one on the board less than two minutes in. Perez directed the corner to Spencer who slotted it home for the team's first lead of the evening. McDaniel, however, did not trail for long and found the net at 43:50 for a 2-2 tie. Neither team would score for the next 55 minutes, though Swarthmore earned the lion's share of the game's goal-scoring opportunities. In the two overtime periods, The Garnet put 11 shots toward net in hopes of breaking the deadlock, but could not find the golden goal and found themselves in a shootout for the second time this season.

In strokes, Swarthmore took a 2-0 lead behind conversions from Garg and Peipher and Bank's solid netminding. McDaniel got one back before a late miss and Perez's make sealed the deal and gave Swarthmore its first conference victory of the season.

The field hockey team returns home for a nonconference tilt against Bryn Athyn on Wednesday, Sep. 27 at 4 p.m.
