SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer's rainy season opener went into overtime on Friday night, but the Garnet were stunned by the Hood College Blazers in the fourth minute of the extra period.
The Garnet, despite being a man down for the final 20 minutes of the game, fended off a persistent attack from the Blazers and kept the game knotted at 0-0 through regulation. The Blazers took 14 shot attempts in the second period and finished with 22 on the night and 10 on goal.
Sophomore Oliver Steinglass, who had logged 13 total minutes the year prior, got the start in goal for the Garnet and recorded nine saves.
Swarthmore challenge Hood's goalkeeper four times and took seven total shots.
The Garnet had a couple opportunities early in the second half, but a shot from Omri Gal in the 51st minute was turned away. Later, in the 89th minute, freshman Francis Eddy Harvey had a header attempt, but the shot went wide of the net.
Senior defender Ryan Ward was dealt a pair of yellow cards in the second period, forcing him out of the contest in the 70th minute. The physical game played on a rain-soaked pitch featured 20 fouls from Hood and 18 from Swarthmore.
The Blazers scored the golden goal 3:19 into overtime. Hood's Kyle McQuillen's long-range shot was denied by a diving save from Steinglass, but the slippery ball caromed back into play and was put away by Kenton Onspaugh to end the game.
Swarthmore looks to bounce back quickly as the Garnet host Rosemont College at 3 p.m. Sunday.
