COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College volleyball team improved to 2-0 against Centennial Conference opponents with a commanding 25-17, 25-9, 25-8 sweep of the Ursinus College Bears on Tuesday, Sep. 19.
The Garnet dominated the Bears in all facets during a match that lasted just under an hour. Swarthmore had an 11-1 advantage in service aces, including six from
Guin Mesh, and a 5-1 margin in blocks. The team posted a .254 hitting mark as it limited the hosts to a -.083 percentage on 13 kills and 19 errors.
Malia Scott recorded seven digs and needs nine more to reach 1,000 for her career.
Sarah Girard led the team in that category with 12 and
Sarah Wallace and
Olivia Leventhal each posted a match-high seven kills.
Emma Morgan-Bennett put down three blocks, including two solo rejections.
In the first frame, Wallace and Morgan-Bennett each recorded four kills and no errors to pace the Garnet attack. Ursinus hung around until 15-12 when the Garnet ran off six straight points to create enough separation and eventually put away the set.
Swarthmore neutralized the Bears' offense in the second set as the hosts hit -.227 with three kills and eight errors.
Alice Liu came off the bench to provide a spark for the Garnet behind three kills and two blocks while the team raced to an 11-1 lead. Leventhal helped close out the match in the third with five kills and no errors in six attempts and Mesh served three consecutive aces to put an exclamation point on the win.
The volleyball team looks to remain perfect in conference play when it travels to McDaniel on Saturday, Sep. 23 for a 1 p.m. match.
