SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Centennial Conference play for the Swarthmore College volleyball team opened on a high note as Swarthmore swept the visiting Dickinson Red Devils 25-10, 25-12, 25-19 on Saturday, Sep. 16.
The Garnet defense stonewalled the visitors as it limited them to a .043 hitting percentage and registered five blocks, with
Emma Morgan-Bennett,
Isabelle Andrews and
Bridget Scott each registering two.
Swarthmore's attack was also efficient, especially in the first set when the team hit .357 with 14 kills and only four errors.
Sarah Wallace led the way with 10 kills while
Mehra den Braven put down nine with no errors in 14 attempts for a .643 hitting mark. Andrews chipped in seven from the middle and Scott had six. Den Braven also recorded a match-high 14 digs as
Malia Scott,
Sarah Girard and
Guin Mesh had nine apiece.
The Garnet jumped out to an early lead in the first set and took advantage of early kills by Wallace to create separation from the Red Devils. At 14-7 with den Braven serving, Swarthmore went a 7-0 tear to effectively put the game out of reach.
The Garnet continued their momentum in the second set with a 4-0 start, capped off by consecutive service aces from Mesh. With
Malia Scott leading the offense, the team hit a respectable .233 while limiting their opponents to a paltry -.033 mark. Dickinson showed signs of the life in the final set with an early lead before den Braven took over and put Swarthmore at 17-11. The Red Devils continued to fight and ultimately saved one match point, but a final kill from den Braven sealed the match.
Swarthmore travels to Ursinus on Tuesday, Sep. 19 at 7 p.m. for a match that will pit head coach
Harleigh Chwastyk against former assistant Cecily Scavicchio.
