GALLOWAY, N.J.–Sophomore Mehra den Braven recorded a career-high 27 digs as the Swarthmore College volleyball team claimed a 3-1 road victory over the Stockton Ospreys on Thursday, Sep. 4. Swarthmore triumphed by a 25-19, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23 score.

The Garnet not only snapped a seven-game winning streak by the hosts, but also limited Stockton, who entered the match as one of the national leaders in hitting percentage, to a .148 mark for the match. Den Braven completed the double-double with 13 kills to go with three aces and Sarah Wallace notched one of her own with 14 kills and 18 digs. Libero Sarah Girard had 20 in the latter category and Malia Scott directed the offense with a match-high 46 assists.

The Garnet attack got off to a hot start in the first set with den Braven posting seven kills and no errors in attempts and Wallace adding six in the former category. Overall, Swarthmore hit .415 as a team and only trailed once, at 0-1. The Garnet cooled off a bit in the next game, but were anchored by Girard on defense as she recorded eight digs in the frame. A 6-0 run by the ospreys gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish, though Swarthmore was able to get within three points late in the game.

In the third, Swarthmore nullified the potent Stockton attack by limiting them to a .095 clip with 10 errors and six kills in 42 attempts. A huge six-point run at the end of the set with on Guin Mesh's serve gave the Garnet the boost they needed to take a 2-1 advantage. Stockton's hitting percentage fell to .051 in the fourth and Swarthmore piled on with four aces, including two consecutive ones by Wallace, to end the match.

The Garnet open Centennial Conference at home on Saturday, Sep. 16 with a 1:00 p.m. match against Dickinson College.
