Women's Soccer Rallies To Fight Off Red Hawks

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Soccer overcame two deficits to top the Montclair St. University Red Hawks 4-2 on Wednesday night.

Marin McCoy tallied a pair of goals for the 10th-ranked Garnet to up her season total to seven. Sophomore Seneca Kinn-Gurzo added a goal and an assist and Sydney Covitz netted the final Garnet goal.

The Garnet came out strong with a pair of shots on goal in the first two minutes, but the Red Hawks soon surprised the Garnet with a goal off a failed clear in the sixth minute.

However, Swarthmore was on the board in the 19th minute when McCoy rushed into the box and cleaned up a loose rebound in the box.

Montclair broke the tie in the 58th minute with a volley from outside the 18 by Emily Benders who scored both Red Hawks' goals.

With just over 20 minutes to go, the Garnet successfully turned a corner kick into a goal. Claire O'Brien's in-swung corner sailed into the box and McCoy guided the ball into the goal from close range with her torso.

Swarthmore earned its first lead in the 77th minute off another corner kick. O'Brien's ball from the right side went out towards the 18 where Katie Dougherty headed the ball closer to goal. The ball bounced around and found the feet of Kinn-Gurzo who took a strong shot from the six and finished for the score.

The Garnet earned an insurance goal in the 87th minute. Kinn-Gurzo threw the ball in from the left side, found freshman Amy Harris who tapped the ball around a defender and to Covitz about 10 yards out. Covitz slipped her shot between the goalie and the far post.

Swarthmore, now 6-0, starts its conference slate at home on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Dickinson College.
