SWARTHMORE, Pa.—The 2017 season started off with a win for Swarthmore College Women's Soccer as the Garnet took down the William Paterson University Pioneers 3-0 on Friday night.
Redshirt senior Hannah Lichtenstein tallied the first Garnet goal of the year. Marin McCoy added a goal and Katie Dougherty capped off the scoring in the second half.
Amy Shmoys earned the win in goal, recording three saves. Defender Emma Tapp aided Shmoys in the fifth minute by clearing just off the goal mouth.
The Garnet went after the Pioneers quickly as McCoy fired off a shot on goal 15 seconds into the contest. Swarthmore would go on to take 11 shots on goal total.
In the seventh minute, McCoy found the back of the net after working her way up the left side, however, an offside flag took the goal of the board.
Swarthmore scored for real in the 33rd minute with McCoy squeaking a pass through the middle to Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein out-positioned her defender and fired far post for the first goal of the year for Swarthmore.
With less than 90 seconds left before halftime, McCoy punched in her first official score of the year. Sophomore Sydney Covitz earned the assist, using a burst of speed to get a good angle for a cross from the right wing and finding McCoy for the one-timer in the middle.
The Garnet took a comfortable 2-0 lead into halftime and then added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Alex Frost took a shot from the left side that was saved and tipped back off the crossbar and back into play. Katie Dougherty corralled the miss and walked the ball into the open net.
Swarthmore went 11 players deep into the bench on Friday. The Garnet return to action on Sunday when they host Eastern University.
