CHESTER, Pa.–Junior
Zelda Bank made 13 saves in the cage and the Swarthmore College field hockey team (1-0) opened the 2017 season with a 3-1 victory over local rival Widener as head coach
Hannah Allison began her tenure with the Garnet.
Freshmen Ali Barratta and
Halsey Hutchinson scored their first collegiate goals while senior
Clare Perez also found the back of the net.
Bank stymied the Pride three times in the opening minutes to keep the score even. Perez and
Jane Blicher registered shots on goal off corners before Barratta put Swarthmore ahead off an assist by
Riya Garg. Bank made two more denials before half time, including one in the final minute.
The Pride continued their attack in the second half, but could not put one past Bank until 51:40. The game remained deadlocked for only four minutes before Perez broke the tie again. She put another shot toward the keeper shortly after and Hutchinson doubled the Garnet's lead in the 63rd minute.
Swarthmore remains on the road for a non-conference game against Arcadia University on Sunday, Sep. 3 at 12 p.m. The Garnet claimed last year's contest with a thrilling, 2-1 victory in overtime.
