Softball Splits with Bears after Offense Erupts

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College softball team rebounded from 9-2 loss in game one of its doubleheader at Ursinus for a 13-5 victory in the nightcap on Saturday, April 8.

In game two, the Garnet compiled 15 hits and 11 RBIs. Kennedy Kings went 4-for-5 in the game with three runs and three RBIs while Marit Vike had three hits and three stolen bases at the top of the order. Sara Planthaber, Marisa Mancini and Elizabeth Curcio all had a pair of hits with Planthaber and Kalli Segel also hitting their first home runs of the season.

Ursinus jumped out to 5-0 lead in the first inning of game one and led 6-0 after three. Curcio drove in a pair to make it 6-2 in the fourth, but Swarthmore was unable to put any more runs on the board.

The Garnet, however, rebounded quickly with their best offensive showing of the season. Segel started the scoring in the second with a two-run shot to right field that scored Curcio as well. Four more runs came in the third courtesy of four hits, including two extra-base knocks. Vike singled and stole second, eventually on a single by Kings. Emilie Morse followed up with a double and Planthaber cleared the bases with a homer to left field for a 6-0 lead.

The Bears got two runs back in the bottom of the frame, but the garnet kept their foot on the gas to the tune of four more runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Kings brought home two and Morse and Planthaber each drove in a run as well. Ursinus scored three runs in the fifth to avoid an early ending to the game by mercy rule, but could not close the gap between themselves and the red-hot Garnet.

McKenzie Ward picked up the win in the circle and Mary Olesnavich also pitched well, allowing one hit and no walks in 2.2 innings.

Swarthmore looks to build on the win when it travels to Washington College for a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 11.
