CHESTERTOWN, Md.–Runs were hard to come by for the Swarthmore College softball team as they fell twice to the homestanding Washington College Shorewomen on Tuesday, April 11. The Garnet suffered an 8-0 defeat before they were edged 2-0 in the nightcap.
In game two,
Marit Vike went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases at the top of the order.
Hannah Thompson and
Marisa Mancini also reached safely and stole a bag while starting pitcher
Emily Bowman struck out seven in six innings.
Swarthmore had a promising start in the nightcap as Vike led off with a single, stole second and reached third on Mancini's base hit with no outs. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert the run and the Shorewomen answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning.
With two outs in the fifth, Swarthmore started a rally as Thompson laid down a bunt single and stole second. Vike singled to advance Thompson, but an unlucky bounce off the base directed the ball to Washington shortstop, who tagged out Thompson as she tried to retreat to third.
In the final frame,
Sara Planthaber reached base on a muffed throw by the first baseman, but the Garnet were unable to take full advantage of the miscue and fell to 10-14 on the season.
Swarthmore hosts rival Haverford at Clothier Field for a conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 13. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
