In split-squad action, the 40th-ranked Swarthmore College women's tennis team earned 9-0 victories over both McDaniel and Gettysburg on Saturday, April 8.
The Garnet made quick work of the McDaniel Green Terror as they won a singles and doubles match by default. At first doubles,
Emma Kassan and
Anna Scheibmeir teamed for an 8-1 win while
Rachel Hechinger and Shivani Gupt won by the same score at second doubles.
In singles, Scheibmeir and Gupta scored 6-0, 6-0 routs at second and third respectively, while Hechinger triumphed 6-0, 6-1 at no. 4. Kassan continued her streak at first singles with a 6-0, 6-2 result while
Sophia Schuster fought to a 6-3, 6-4 win to complete the sweep.
Against Gettysburg, Swarthmore ran out to a quick, 3-0 lead after doubles.
Rachel Bronkema and
Ashley Gao blanked their opponents at no. 3 while
Alli Wong and
Maria Cuervo surrendered just one game in the top spot.
Vivien Fernandez and
Julia Gokhberg also cruised to an 8-2 win at no. 2.
Second singles player
Shirline Wee had a 6-1, 6-1 win while
Arya Jemal handed her opponent a 6-1, 6-3 defeat. Cuervo finished strong with a 6-4, 6-0 victory and
Audrey Haring won 6-2, 7-5 at no. 5. At the top of the lineup, Fernandez battled to a 7-5, 6-3 triumph and
Rachel Bronkema won a second-set tiebreaker to conclude the afternoon.
