SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College baseball team picked up its first conference win of the season with a 12-2 rout of the visiting Washington College Shoremen on Wednesday, April 5.
The Garnet offense erupted for 17 hits while starting pitcher
Sawyer Lake was strong on the mound for his second win of the year. The freshman southpaw scattered four hits and no walks and struck out eight in seven shutout innings.
Max Grullon collected three hits for the second consecutive game to go with two runs and two RBIs.
Conor Elliott crossed the plate three times while
Wesley Fishburn and
Charles Levitt each had two hits and two runs.
Cole Beeker,
Matt Palmer and
Ryan Burnett also finished with a pair of hits and
AJ Liu drove in two.
Much like the win against DeSales, Swarthmore's victory started with four runs in the first. Levitt singled and stole second before scoring two batters later. Fishburn and Elliott scored after Grullon's single and an error and Palmer plated Grullon to put the fourth run on the board.
In the third, Swarthmore scored four more for a commanding 8-0 lead. Levitt led off with a single, which was followed by a Fishburn base hit. Both players scored on a double by Elliott, who was driven by Beeker at the next at-bat. A wild pitch and Palmer's second hit brought in Beeker for yet another run.
After a pitching change, the Garnet scored another run in the fourth and pitched in three more in the seventh, powered by doubles from Grullon, Burnett and Liu. The Shoremen were able to find a run apiece in the eighth and ninth innings to prevent the shutout, but could not erase their sizeable deficit.
Swarthmore completes the series against Washington on Friday, April 7 when it travels to Chestertown, Maryland for a 3:30 p.m. start.
