Garnet Erase Five-Run Deficit, but Fall in Extra Innings

CHESTERTOWN, Md.–Trailing 8-3 after three innings, the Swarthmore College baseball team scored five unanswered runs before ultimately falling, 9-8, to the Washington College Shoremen in the 10th inning on Friday, April 7.

Freshman Cole Beeker had three hits and three RBIs while classmate AJ Liu was 4-for-5 at the top of the order. Conor Elliott, Max Grullon and Ryan Burnett all finished with a pair of hits with Burnett also crossing the plate twice.

Relief pitcher Zach Gonzalez allowed one hit and struck out three in five innings while the Garnet offense helped close the gap.

The Shoremen used five runs in the bottom of the third to take an 8-3 lead, which they held until the top of the sixth. Jaron Shrock gained a free base after being hit by a pitch and reach second on Burnett's walk. Liu loaded the bases on a single to right field and with one out, Beeker drove in a pair of runs for an 8-5 game. Grullon followed up with another single to plate Liu and bring the visitors within two.

Gonzalez retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame and the Garnet wasted no time in tying up the game. Burnett singled and scored on Liu's double before Beeker drove in his third run of the afternoon for an 8-8 ballgame.

Still tied in the eighth, Jackson Roberts singled and reached scoring position on a sac bunt but was unable to be brought in. The Shoremen threatened with a runner on third, before James Rutledge got the batter looking to keep the game knotted. Griffin Kammerer punched up a strikeout in the ninth to preserve the tie before the hosts broke through in the 10th on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

Swarthmore returns home on Saturday, April 8 for a conference doubleheader against Dickinson. Prior to the 12:30 p.m. game, the Department of Athletics will dedicate the newly constructed press box to former head coach and professor of physical education Ernie Prudente.
