SWARTHMORE, Pa.–It took less than two hours for the Swarthmore College baseball team to earn a crucial 6-1 win over the Ursinus College Bears at home on Monday, April 24.
With the victory, Swarthmore improved to 6-8 in conference and remained in the hunt for one of the three remaining postseason berths.
Sophomore
Charles Groppe pitched a complete game and allowed no earned runs to the potent offense of Ursinus.
Conor Elliott had two hits and two RBIs while
AJ Liu and
Ryan Burnett each recorded a pair of hits as well.
Charles Levitt notched a single in his only at-bat of the afternoon and also contributed with two walks and a sac bunt.
Wesley Fishburn extended his hit streak to 12 games with his third double of the season.
Liu led off the game with a double and reached third on Levitt's sacrifice. A groundout by Fishburn plated Liu for a quick 1-0 advantage. The Bears' offense was held in check by Groppe and the Garnet defense to preserve the lead.
In the fourth,
Cole Beeker and
Max Grullon reached on singles and reached scoring position for
Kenji Yoshii, who plated Beeker before Burnett singled in Grullon. Three more runs came in the fifth, starting with Elliott driving in Levitt and Fishburn on a single to the left side. Grullon completed the scoring with a sac fly to center. Groppe continued to make quick work of the Bears and mowed down the visitors with a four-pitch inning in the eighth.
