SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Playing well into the night, the Swarthmore College women's tennis team remained undefeated in Centennial Conference competition with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats on Saturday, April 22.
The 40th-ranked Garnet started the evening with a sweep in doubles.
Alli Wong and
Maria Cuervo won 8-2 at the second spot while
Emma Kassan and
Anna Scheibmeir faced little resistance in an 8-3 victory at no. 1. The third doubles pair of
Julia Gokhberg and
Vivien Fernandez battled to a 9-7 win to secure the sweep.
The Diplomats, however, evened the score with a trio of three-setters. Kassan fell 6-1, 5-7, 7-10 at first singles while Gokhberg had a narrow 3-6, 6-1, 7-10 defeat at third singles. Wong also lost by a close margin, dropping a 6-1, 6-7(4), 2-10 contest. The Garnet claimed the match behind Fernandez's 6-4, 6-2 win at second singles and Cuervo's 6-2, 6-0 in the fifth flight.
Arya Jemal also secured a 6-2 win at no. 6.
Swarthmore puts its unblemished conference record on the line when it travels to local rival Haverford College next week.
