SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College softball team hosted the Centennial Conference-leading McDaniel College Terror on Thursday, April 20 and battled hard in game one for a 3-1 loss before succumbing 11-2 in the nightcap.
In game one, the Garnet outhit the Terror by a 7-5 margin. Junior pitcher
Emily Bowman did not allow a baserunner in the first three innings and struck out three in that time. The Green Terror scored a single run in the fourth, but Swarthmore provided an answer in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman
Kalli Segel led off with a double and reached third on a sac bunt by
Fran Reckers. With two outs,
Marit Vike executed a bunt and beat out the throw to first, which allowed Segel to come home for the game-tying run.
McDaniel put another one on the board in the sixth and plated another in the seventh for its final run.
The visitors took an early lead in the nightcap with a run in the first frame. Swarthmore, however, was able to respond, which began on a slap single by Vike, who then proceeded to steal her team-leading 14th base of the year. A sac bunt moved her to third and a failed rundown allowed the junior shortstop to come all the way around.
Eight unanswered runs put Swarthmore into a hole and although the Garnet put up a run in the fourth after hits from
Emilie Morse and Segel, they were unable to get within striking distance as the game ended after five innings.
The softball team concludes Centennial Conference competition on Saturday, April 22 with a road doubleheader at Muhlenberg College.
