ALLENTOWN, Pa.–The Swarthmore College softball team capped off the conference portion of its 2017 schedule with a pair of wins, beating the Muhlenberg College Mules by 4-0 and 5-2 scores on Sunday, April 23.
Marit Vike had four hits across the doubleheader while senior
Sara Planthaber drove in a combined four runs. In game one, junior
Emily Bowman shut down the Mules as she pitched a three-hit, complete-game shutout with only one walk surrendered. In the nightcap,
Mary Olesnavich earned the win in a relief appearance with two hits and one run allowed in four innings.
In game one, Swarthmore scored early with a run in the second frame. Planthaber led off with a single to short and reached second on a single by
Elizabeth Curcio before a fielding miscue allowed her to go all the way around for a 1-0 Garnet lead.
Bowman kept the Mules' bats at bay as Swarthmore held on to a one-run advantage. In the fourth,
Gabriella Natoli and Vike notched bunt singles to reach first and second, respectively. A sacrifice by
Marisa Mancini moved both runners into scoring positions and
Kennedy Kings plated Natoli with a single to left center. Planthaber cleared the bases with a double for her second of the game, giving the visitors a 4-0 lead they would not relinquish.
The Garnet offense stayed hot in game two to the tune of 12 hits and plated three clutch runs in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie. In the third, Kings drove in Natoli and Planthaber brought in Vike for a 2-0 margin. The Mules evened the ballgame with runs in the fourth and sixth innings and limited Swarthmore to no baserunners with two outs in the seventh.
The Garnet rallied, beginning with a walk by Mancini and a single by Kings. Planthaber drove in another run with a base hit and
Emilie Morse out two more on the board behind a base hit of her own. In the bottom of the inning, Olesnavich retired the side in order to close the game.
Swarthmore concludes the 2017 season with a nonconference home doubleheader against NJCU on Thursday, April 27. Game times are set at 3 and 5 p.m.
