FREDERICKSBURG, Va.–The 38th-ranked Swarthmore College men's tennis team picked up a pair of victories on Sunday, April 2, blanking McDaniel and edging No. 16 Mary Washington by a 5-4 score.
Swarthmore was dominant against McDaniel, starting off with a quick doubles sweep.
Evan Han and
Yosuke Higashi teamed for an 8-2 win at first doubles while
Kevin Xu and
William Teoh won by an identical score at the second spot. At third doubles,
Max Gruber and
James Chen cruised to an 8-1 rout. In singles, the Garnet dropped only two games across six courts, winning by a 6-0, 6-0 count in four flights.
Against 16th-ranked Mary Washington, Swarthmore found itself behind after doubles.
John Larkin and
Blake Oetting prevailed 8-6 in the third spot, but Swarthmore dropped close matches in the other two. The Garnet, however, excelled in singles, winning four matches in straight sets.
Michael Song won 6-2, 6-4 at no. 5 while
John Larkin had an identical score at no. 2.
Simon Vernier held on for a 6-3, 7-5 victory in third singles and first singles player
Mark Fallati clinched the match with a gutsy, 6-2, 7-6(2) performance, overcoming a 0-3 deficit in the second set.
The men's tennis team travels to Gettysburg on Saturday, April 8 for a rescheduled conference match against the Bullets.
