READING, Pa.–The Swarthmore College softball team suffered two nonconference defeats on Tuesday, April 18 as the Garnet fell 4-0 to Penn State Berks in game one and were handed a 4-1 loss in the nightcap.
Marit Vike and
Emilie Morse each finished with two hits in the doubleheader with Morse also scoring Swarthmore's lone run. Freshman
Kalli Segel had a double and drove in her classmate Morse in game two.
In game one, the Garnet had its best opportunity in the third as Morse led off with a double to left field.
Gabriella Natoli followed with a single and reached second as Morse advanced to third. With one out, however, the visitors were unable to put a run on the board and Berks took advantage with four combined runs in the third and fourth frames.
Emily Bowman struck out five of the 11 batters she faced in a relief appearance.
Swarthmore held a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with Morse starting things off. The freshman singled and reached second a sac bunt by
Elizabeth Curcio before crossing the plate on Segel's double.
McKenzie Ward kept things going with a single but a double play ended the inning. Berks took the lead behind three runs in the third and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Frankie Ponziani allowed no earned runs in two innings of relief.
The Garnet look to rebound when they host conference leader McDaniel on Thursday, April 20 at 3 and 5 p.m.
