Warm Shines as Baseball Battles to Split with Diplomats

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College baseball team followed a familiar script on Saturday, April 15 as they split a doubleheader with the visiting Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats. The Garnet fell 8-1 in game one before rebounding with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

Ryan Warm impressed for a second consecutive start as he picked up the win in game two. In nine innings, he allowed two runs, both unearned, and scattered five hits and just one walk. Wesley Fishburn continued his streak at the plate by going 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. AJ Liu had a combined four this in the doubleheader while Max Grullon and Ryan Burnett each had two apiece in game two.

Swarthmore opened the afternoon with a run in the first as Liu led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI-base hit. The Diplomats, however, strung together eight unanswered runs over the remainder of the game to take game one.

F&M continued its momentum with two more runs in the top of the first in the nightcap. The Garnet responded with a run of their own as Liu led off with a single and scored on Fishburn's double. Warm settled in during the second inning and silence F&M's bats, allowing just four hits over the final eight innings.

In the bottom of the third, Swarthmore caught and overtook the visitors with a three-run burst. Burnett singled and stole second before scoring on a single by Liu. A double play cleared the bases, but the Garnet continued to hit with two down. Fishburn had a base hit and was followed by Conor Elliott, who reached on a walk. Cole Beeker plated FIshburn and Grullon doubled to bring in Elliott.

Warm and the defense held the Diplomats off the board as Swarthmore added an insurance run in the sixth. Matt Palmer scored for a 5-2 margin on Burnett's double and the Garnet never looked back as they improved to 4-6 in the Centennial Conference.

Swarthmore travels to Ursinus on Tuesday, April 18 for a league game at 3:30 p.m.
