COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.–Facing a 4-1 deficit in the eighth inning, the Swarthmore College baseball team plated three runs to even up the game, but ultimately fell by a 5-4 score to the Ursinus College Bears on Tuesday, April 18.
Matt Palmer had two singles on the afternoon and
Wesley Fishburn extended his hitting streak to nine games to go with two RBIs.
Ryan Burnett drove in a run with a triple and
AJ Liu reached base safely three times with a single and a pair of walks.
Freshman pitcher
Sawyer Lake's scoreless streak ended at 25 consecutive innings, the second-longest mark in Centennial Conference history.
Ursinus scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth, but did not lead for long as Swarthmore provided an immediate answer in the fifth. Palmer singled and moved to second on a sac bunt by
Kenji Yoshii. Faced with a full count, Burnett came through with a triple to center field that scored the game-tying run.
The Bears brought in three unanswered over the next three innings for a 4-1 advantage heading into the eighth. Liu started things off on the right foot with a base hit and stolen base to reach scoring position with no outs.
Charles Levitt was hit by a pitch and he and Liu took a free base on a wild pitch. Fishburn singled in both runners and later scored on a sac fly by
Max Grullon. The Bears, however, were able to find a run in the bottom of the frame for a lead they would not relinquish in the ninth.
Swarthmore hosts Ursinus on Friday, April 21 at 3:30 p.m. as they complete season series.
