SWARTHMORE, Pa. –Freshmen
Kennedy Kings and
Emilie Morse each tallied three hits in game two as the Swarthmore College softball team bounced back to earn a doubleheader split with the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats on Saturday, April 15.
Swarthmore fell 6-2 in game one before prevailing by a 6-3 in the back half of the doubleheader. Kings,
Marit Vike and
Bekah Katz each had a pair of hits in game one as Swarthmore outhit the Dips by a 9-8 margin, but were unable to convert the hits to runs on the scoreboard.
The Garnet trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Katz reached first on a single to left field. Vike followed with a base hit and both players moved into scoring position shortly after. Kings brought both runs in with a single to right center as Swarthmore trailed 4-2. F&M scored insurance runs in the sixth and seventh and kept Swarthmore off the scoreboard to secure the win.
In the nightcap, the Garnet got off to a strong start as Vike bunted for a single and stole second. Kings singled her in for her third RBI of the day and a 1-0 lead. F&M provided an immediate answer by tying the game up, but it did not remain knotted for long. In the second,
Elizabeth Curcio singled before Morse and
Kalli Segel hit back-to-back doubles to allow to more runs to score.
Another pair of runs came in the third as Curcio singled in Kings and Morse hit another double to drive her in. Morse continued to stay hot at the plate with a single to lead off the sixth and the Garnet eventually loaded the bases for Kings, who plated the final run with a single to left.
After entering in the fourth,
Mary Olesnavich picked up the win as she scattered three hits and no runs in the final four innings.
Swarthmore takes a break for conference play when it travels to Penn State Berks for a nonleague doubleheader on Tuesday, April 18 at 3 and 5 p.m.
