ALLENTOWN, Pa.–
Wesley Fishburn hit his second home run of the season in the eighth inning and
Conor Elliott finished 4-for-5 with a run and two RBIs as the Swarthmore College baseball team suffered an 8-5 road defeat to the Muhlenberg College Mules on Friday, April 14.
The Garnet settled for a series split after blanking the Mules, 10-0, at Clothier Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Swarthmore offense recorded 14 hits, reaching double figures in that category for the sixth time in the last seven games. Fishburn and Palmer each had a pair of hits and pinch hitter
Jackson Roberts roped a triple in the ninth inning as the Garnet tried to mount a late rally.
Charles Levitt also finished the afternoon with two stolen bases.
The Mules scored in the bottom of the first after a leadoff triple, but the Garnet provided an answer in the top of the third. Levitt was hit by a pitch and stole second and third before scoring an RBI-single up the middle from Elliott.
Muhlenberg regained the lead with another run in the fourth, though it was short-lived. Fishburn singled and reached scoring position by stealing second. Elliott plated him with a double to right as the Garnet evened things up again. The hosts plated four answered runs for a 6-2 margin after six frames. In the seventh, Elliott notched his third hit and made it to third on a base knock by
Cole Beeker.
Max Grullon drove in Elliott before the Mules used four hits in the seventh to bring in two runs.
Fishburn's two-run shot with
AJ Liu on base cut into Swarthmore's deficit, but the Garnet were unable to close the gap completely and now sit at 3-5 against Centennial Conference foes.
Swarthmore hosts Franklin & Marshall for a league doubleheader on Saturday, April 15 at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.
