Hot Start Propels Men's Lacrosse Past Mules

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—A run of six goals to open Wednesday night's Centennial Conference game put Swarthmore College in good position to beat the visiting Muhlenberg College Mules. The Mules made things interesting with a run of their own in the second half, but the Garnet fought them off and won 14-9.

Swarthmore (7-4, 2-2 Centennial) had two players record hat tricks: Cam Marsh and Austin Chang. Marsh also dished out three assists and Chang dealt out two.

Freshmen Jake Ross and Nathaniel Johns punched in a pair of goals and Dylan Rittenhouse, Jimmy Eberle, Ryan Mulvey and Griffin Johnston all scored once.

Cole Fox recorded 12 saves in net for the win.

Swarthmore went 16-for-26 at the faceoff x. Stephen Ducey won 13 of those tries and collected five ground balls on his own.

Long pole Jack Belluche recorded a team-high six ground balls. Eric Levin notched three ground balls, two caused turnovers and two assists.

The Garnet led off with a goal from Johnston at 8:41 in the first. Just seven seconds later, after Ducey won the faceoff, the Garnet scored again as Ducey connected with Chang for the goal. Johns then notched back-to-back goals, and Ross and Marsh closed out the 6-0 opening run.

The Garnet were then caught in the midst of a 5-1 Muhlenberg outburst that carried into the beginning of the fourth quarter and pulled Muhlenberg within two goals. With 14:17 to play, Eberle corralled a rebounded shot and pushed in a goal off the ground ball. Rittenhouse broadened Swarthmore's lead to 9-5 with 11:56 to play.

After going scoreless in the third quarter, Swarthmore posted seven goals in the fourth, including two man-up goals to claim the 14-9 victory.

Swarthmore travels to No. 6 Dickinson College on Saturday.
