COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Lacrosse tallied four goals in the final four minutes to put some pressure on the Ursinus College Bears on Saturday but ultimately ran out of time to complete the comeback, losing 14-12.
Five players scored for the Garnet with
Elizabeth Wainwright netting a team-best four goals.
Briana Narzikul scored a hat trick,
Tess Wild and
Taylor Chiang each added a pair, and
Andie Battin scored once.
The Garnet found themselves down 6-1 after Ursinus' hot start in the first eight minutes. By halftime, Swarthmore trailed 9-4. With less than 10 minutes to go, the Garnet were still down by 5, 13-8. However, Swarthmore caught fire in the final four minutes. Narzikul tallied her second of the game with 3:57 to play and 80 seconds later, Wainwright followed with a free-position goal, her third goal of the game.
Ursinus got one back with 1:55 to play, but Swarthmore's Wild won the next draw and then found Wainwright for the goal, her 30th of the season.
The next draw control went to Swarthmore's
Sophie Peipher, and Narzikul scored another Garnet goal with 1:09 to go. Ursinus won the resulting draw control and held on for the win.
Both teams finished with 14 draw controls in the contest. Wild led the Garnet with five draw controls and Peipher added four.
Betsy Cohen recorded six saves in the first 40 minutes, and
Lily Fornof added a save in the final 20 minutes.
Swarthmore resumes play on Wednesday at Bryn Mawr College for a 7 p.m. game.
