Garnet Nearly Upset No. 19 Johns Hopkins in Game Two of Twinbill

BALTIMORE–A walk-off single by the 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays dashed a valiant upset bid by the Swarthmore College baseball team on Saturday, April 2.

The Garnet ultimately fell by a 5-4 score after suffering a 5-0 defeat in the first game of the doubleheader. In game one, Swarthmore was limited to three hits as Johns Hopkins used the long ball to score four of its five runs.

In the nightcap, Swarthmore jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Charles Levitt singled and scored one batter later on a Wesley Fishburn single combined with an error. Conor Elliott followed up with a base hit of his own and Max Grullon brought in Fishburn with a groundout to third base.

The Blue Jays scored four in the bottom of the third, but the resolute Garnet answered right back with a run in the next half inning. Grullon singled and made it to second on a failed pickoff before reaching third on Cole Beeker's single. Matt Palmer drove in Grullon with a well-executed squeeze bunt on the first pitch of the at-bat.

Swarthmore threatened to even the proceedings in the sixth with Beeker and Grullon on the corners and only one out, but a double play ended the opportunity.

Freshman starting pitcher Ryan Warm kept the Jays off the scoreboard and was relieved by classmate James Rutledge in the seventh as the Garnet still trailed 4-3. The Garnet broke through in the eighth with tying run courtesy of Conor Elliott, who reached on a walk. Grullon's single brought him to third and Beeker plated him to knot the game at four apiece.

Rutledge worked through Hopkins in the bottom of the frame to preserve the tie and the Garnet put the potential winning run on first with no outs in the ninth. A strike out and double play negated the threat before the hosts closed the game with a walk-off single to right field.

Grullon and Beeker each finished 3-4 while Levitt notched two hits as well.

Swarthmore looks to build on the doubleheader when it hosts conference foe Washington College on Tuesday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m.
