CLEARWATER, Fla.—Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse was knotted up with the Catholic University of America Cardinals 7-7 entering the fourth quarter of Wednesday's spring break contest. The Cardinals, however, pulled away with three goals in the final period to take the game 10-7.
Matt Johnson recorded a hat trick in the loss and four other players—
Cam Marsh,
Griffin Johnston,
Nathaniel Johns and
Jake Ross—scored an individual goal as well. Johnson and Marsh lead the Garnet with eight goals each this season.
Swarthmore dipped to 2-2 on the year while Catholic improved to 5-1.
The Garnet dominated at the faceoff x, with
Stephen Ducey winning 10-of-14 faceoffs and
Andrew Choe going 6-for-7.
After falling behind to start, Swarthmore responded with a pair of goals in quick succession six minutes in to even the count at 2-2. Catholic netted three more goals to close out the quarter but Johnson scored a pair early in the second to pull Swarthmore within one. Swarthmore still trailed by one, 7-6, going into halftime.
After the break, with five minutes to play in the third, Johnston zipped in a goal to finally even the count again, this time at 7-7. In the fourth, the Cardinals rallied for three unanswered goals, including a man-up tally, to claim the win.
Swarthmore returns to action in Clearwater on Friday at 1 p.m. against Rhodes College.
