FORT MYERS, Fla.–Freshman
Jared Gillen's fourth hit of the afternoon propelled the Swarthmore College baseball team to a 3-2 win over the Rivier Raiders in the 11th inning on Sunday, March 5.
Gillen tripled to left field, driving in sophomore
Conor Elliott, who singled to start the inning. Elliott finished the game with two hits and two RBIs and freshman
Max Grullon also had a pair of singles.
Jackson Roberts and
Cole Beeker each crossed the plate as the Garnet picked up their first win of the season.
Griffin Kammerer improved to 1-0 on the season and
Jackson Ramey was effective in relief, allowing only one hit and no runs in four innings.
After four scoreless innings, the Raiders put two on the board with a double in the top of the fifth. One frame later, Swarthmore knotted the game with two runs on three hits. Beeker singled through the right side and was followed by
Jackson Roberts' single. Both runners got into scoring position after a wild pitch and were plated by Elliott's single to right center.
In the ninth, Gillen led off with a single to center and advanced on a sac bunt by
Cal Barnett-Mayotte. With two outs and Gillen on third, the Garnet were unable to break the tie as the game went into extra innings.
Ramey worked a 1-2-3 inning in the tenth before a double play ended the bottom of the frame. Swarthmore finally broke through in the 11th on Gillen's triple to open its Spring Break trip.
The baseball team continues competition in Fort Myers with an early morning doubleheader against Defiance on Monday, March 6. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
