FORT MYERS, Fla.–The Swarthmore College baseball team dropped two games to the Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Monday, March 6.
The Garnet fell 11-3 in game one before being edged out by a 6-5 score in the back half. The Yellow Jackets closed out the afternoon on a walk-off wild pitch with two outs.
Freshman
Cole Beeker had three hits and two runs across the doubleheader while
Jackson Roberts and
Max Grullon each had a pair of hits in game two.
Jared Gillen plated two runs in the nightcap and now leads the team with ten hits this season.
In game one, a four-run second inning from Defiance and fielding miscues put Swarthmore in a 5-1 hole. The Garnet got a run back when
Cal Barnett-Mayotte drove in Gillen with a sac fly, but surrendered two in the sixth on a double to right center. With an 0-1 count in the bottom of the frame, Beeker doubled and crossed the plate on
Conor Elliott's single before a four-run seventh sunk the Garnet.
Noah Linhart was charged with loss after allowing seven runs with only one of those earned.
Swarthmore got on the board first in game two when
Jaron Shrock drove in
Matt Palmer with a double to right field. Defiance evened the score in the bottom of the first and took a 5-1 lead with four runs in the fourth on two hits and an error.
The Garnet answered immediately for a 5-5 ballgame. Grullon led off with a single and was followed by
Charles Levitt's walk. Beeker drove in Grullon with his second single of the game and throwing error by the catcher allowed Levitt to score. Gillen plated Elliott and Beeker on a base hit to right to make it a 5-5 game.
Freshman pitcher
James Rutledge was solid in the fifth and sixth frames, rolling up a 5-4-3 double play to end the latter inning. The Yellow Jackets, however, broke through in the seventh and walked off after a wild pitch.
Swarthmore continues their Spring Break slate against Hiram and Alvernia on Tuesday, March 7.
