LEXINGTON, Va.–Two nationally-ranked foes defeated the Swarthmore College men's tennis team on Saturday, March 4.
In the first match of the day, the 38th-ranked Washington & Lee Generals topped the No. 29 Garnet by a 6-3 score.
Mark Fallati and
Josh Powell earned an 8-6 win at first doubles, but Swarthmore trailed by a 2-1 count heading into singles action.
Thomas Vernier went the distance in a three-set, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-3 win at third singles and
Kevin Xu won 7-6(2), 6-1 at the sixth spot.
John Larkin,
Josh Powell and
Ari Cepelewicz all extended their matches to three sets, but could not best the Generals.
In a neutral-site match, Swarthmore dropped a 7-2 decision to 28th-ranked Sewanee at Lexington. The Garnet led 2-1 after doubles competition, but were swept in singles action for their fourth loss of the season.
The men's tennis team looks to rebound when it faces off against No. 18 University of Redlands on Wednesday, March 8 at 2 p.m. PST (5 p.m. EST).
