SWARTHMORE, Pa.–A strong fourth quarter by the visiting Vassar College Brewers (3-0) sunk the Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team (2-1) on Saturday.
The Garnet fell by an 8-3 score after the Brewers netted three goals in the final period and held the hosts off the board.
Sophomore Matt Johnson scored two goals and Cam Marsh added the third. Ryan Mulvey recorded a pair of assists and Jack Belluche had a team-high four groundballs.
Vassar took a 2-0 lead after 10 minutes in the first quarter before Marsh netted his seventh goal of the year with a minute remaining. A 3-0 run by the Brewers in the second frame made it 5-1 for the visitors until Johnson buried a pass from Mulvey with 11 seconds left before halftime.
Johnson's second goal brought the Garnet within two, but Swarthmore was unable to find another answer and picked up its first loss of the year.
Both struggles struggled to maintain possession through the cold and windy game as temperatures hovered around the freezing mark. Vassar committed 23 turnovers and Swarthmore committed 20.
Cole Fox recorded six saves between the pipes.
Men's Lacrosse ships out to Florida on Saturday morning where the Garnet will play a pair of spring break games next week. The Garnet begin spring break play against Catholic at noon on Wednesday.
