Garnet Nipped By Cavaliers

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Lacrosse made a furious charge in the second half of Wednesday night's home game with the Cabrini University Cavaliers to pull within a goal in the final minute. The visitors, however, held on to take the game 12-11 and improved to 7-2 on the season. Swarthmore slipped to 5-2 on the year with the setback.

Swarthmore's Tess Wild netted a career-high five goals and added seven draw controls. Elizabeth Wainwright scored four goals, scoring at least a hat trick for the fifth time this season.

Sydnie Schwarz and Taylor Chiang also scored a goal for the Garnet.

In net for the Garnet, freshman goalie Betsy Cohen tallied 13 saves. 

Swarthmore scored first, finding purchase in the back of the net just 1:06 into the game on a tally by Wild. Cabrini strung together a trio of goals, but Wild and Wainwright scored within 61 seconds of each other to even the count at 3-3 with 13:08 to go. The Cavs and Garnet then traded goals with Briana Narzikul zipping a pass through traffic to Chiang for the goal. The visitors then posted four straight goals before Wild netted a goal off a pass from Sophie Peipher with 28:41 to play in the second half.

Midway through the second period, Cabrini had built an 11-6 lead. The Garnet then took advantage of Cabrini yellow cards by scoring two player-up goals in quick succession. In total, the Cavs received eight yellow cards and had two players disqualified from the contest. Swarthmore out-scored Cabrini 5-1 in the final 13 minutes, including two goals in the final 100 seconds. Peipher found Wild for her fifth goal of the game with 27 seconds to play.

Cabrini won the final draw control and was able to hang on to the one-goal win.

Swarthmore returns to Centennial Conference play on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game at Ursinus College.
