Softball Drops Pair to Rutgers-Newark

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Playing its third doubleheader in four days, the Swarthmore College softball team suffered two defeats to the visiting Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders on Sunday, March 26. The Garnet fell 9-1 in game one and were blanked by a 2-0 score in the night cap.

In game one, the Swarthmore offense mustered four hits, with two coming off the bat of freshman Marisa Mancini. The hosts scored the first run of the game, breaking a tie in the third when Emily Barranca made it all the way around from second after Mancini's single and a Rutgers-Newark miscue.

Unfortunately, the visitors took a 2-1 lead in the fourth and went off for six more runs in the fifth to put the contest out of reach for the Garnet.

Swarthmore limited the Scarlet Raiders to just two runs in the night cap with Mary Olesnavich allowing one earned and no walks through seven innings in the circle.

Down 1-0 in the first, Swarthmore loaded the bases with two outs and threatened to take the lead, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Olesnavich and the defense helped keep the Garnet within just one run until the visitors took advantage of a pair of errors to double their lead in the sixth.

Swarthmore could not find an answer in the final two frames and fell to 9-9 on the season. Freshman Kalli Segel finished the game with two hits and a walk.

The softball team completes its homestand on Tuesday, March 28 when it hosts conference foe McDaniel at 3 and 5 p.m.
