SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Lacrosse went head-to-head with the No. 4 Franklin & Marshall Diplomats on Saturday to open the Centennial Conference portion of the 2017 season. The Garnet, riding a five-game win streak to start the season took their first loss, falling 13-5 to the Diplomats.
Elizabeth Wainwright and Briana Narzikul each scored a pair of goals, and Taylor Chiang added a goal.
Tess Wild had a standout game in the midfield, recording four ground balls, four caused turnovers and three caused turnovers.
In the net, Betsy Cohen recorded 11 saves in 46 minutes.
F&M struck first, getting a goal in the first five minutes, but Swarthmore responded with a goal about two minutes later. Freshman Sydnie Schwarz made a pass from behind the net to a cutting Wainwright who tipped in the goal.
F&M found the back of the net again 18 seconds later. Swarthmore responded quickly, netting the tying goal 40 seconds later. Wild forced a Diplomats' turnover and then threaded a long outlet pass to Chiang on the run who finished for a goal.
The Diplomats, however, rallied for seven-straight goals to close out the first period. In the second period, Swarthmore drew first blood. Narzikul tallied a free-position goal with 27:23 to play. The Diplomats scored the next three goals, and then the Garnet followed a goal by Narzikul with 4:52 to go and a free-position goal by Wainwright with 1:38 to play.
The Garnet are back in action on Wednesday when they host Cabrini University at 7 p.m.
