GALLOWAY, N.J.–Sophomore
Conor Elliott drove in a run during each game of the doubleheader as the Swarthmore College baseball team fell by 4-2 and 3-2 scores to the Stockton Ospreys on Saturday, March 25.
The Garnet began the afternoon with a run in the first inning as Elliot drove in senior
Ryan Burnett on a single through the left side. In the bottom of the third, Stockton caught and overtook Swarthmore with three runs on four hits.
The Garnet put a runner in scoring position in the sixth inning as freshman
AJ Liu led off with a walk and stole second with one out. Liu eventually made it to third, but was stranded as Swarthmore's deficit remained at two runs.
In the seventh, shortstop
Max Grullon led off with a double, one of his two hits in the game, and later scored on a sac fly by
Jared Gillen. Trailing by one and on its last out, Swarthmore struck out to end the game and fall to 6-11 on the year.
Swarthmore held an early, 2-0 lead in the night cap thanks to a strong third inning.
Matt Palmer was hit and by a pitch and reached second on
Kenji Yoshii's single, his first of two in the game. A fielding error brought Palmer in and another base hit by Elliott plated Yoshii for a 2-0 advantage.
The Ospreys answered with three runs in the fourth behind four hits. In the fifth, Yoshii led off with a single up the middle and reached scoring position when
Charles Levitt Walked. A pop up and double play, however, ended the threat. In the final frame, Palmer singled with one out, but the Garnett offense faltered as the visitors left with a narrow, 3-2 defeat.
The Garnet return to Clothier Field on Tuesday, March 28 for a 3:30 p.m. game against DeSales University.
