SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College baseball team (6-10) fell by a 5-1 score to the visiting Gwynedd Mercy Griffins (7-4) on Thursday, March 23.
The Garnet matched the Griffins with eight hits, but were only able to manage one run.
Conor Elliott and
Ryan Burnett each had doubles for the hosts and Burnett finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Starting pitcher
Noah Linhart was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs in seven innings on the hill.
Gwynedd Mercy built a 2-0 lead after three innings and threatened to add to its total with runners on first and second and no outs. Swarthmore escaped the jam by turning a double play, one of two on the afternoon, and gunning out the Griffins at second on an attempted steal.
In the bottom of the sixth, Elliott doubled to left on the first pitch and he saw and took advantage of an off-target throw to come all the way around and make it 3-1. Unfortunately for Swarthmore, however, the Griffins increased their lead to five with a two-run shot in the eighth and protected that lead for the final margin.
Swarthmore will play two on the road in a nonleague doubleheader at Stockton on Saturday, March 25. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
