CLEARWATER, Fla.—A seven-goal second quarter propelled Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse over the Rhodes College Lynx on Friday as the Garnet wrapped up their spring break swing. The Garnet built an 8-2 lead and then held on for the 12-6 win.
Cam Marsh and
Jake Ross each recorded hat tricks for the Garnet.
Matt Johnson scored twice, and
Dylan Rittenhouse,
Austin Chang,
Andrew Choe and
Nathaniel Johns all scored.
The Garnet were strong on the draw, with
Stephen Ducey winning 10-of-15 faceoffs and
Andrew Choe adding 3-of-4 wins. Ducey corralled eight of the faceoff groundballs on his own. Swarthmore won the first six faceoffs of the second quarter setting them up for a big run.
In the net,
Cole Fox recorded 12 saves to help Swarthmore improve to 3-2. Rhodes, losing for the first time this season, fell to 6-1.
Rhodes scored first, but then the Garnet sprung for seven straight goals. Johnson put Swarthmore on the board with 3:32 to play in the first to spark the Garnet run. The run was capped off by a highlight-reel goal from Choe. Choe grabbed the groundball off the faceoff, charged towards the goal, slipped between a pack of defenders with a swim move before dumping in a goal, making it 7-1.
Choe's goal was Swarthmore's third tally in 17 seconds. Johns had scored with 7:08 to play, Marsh followed with a goal at 7:00 and then Choe scored at 6:51.
Rhodes got a goal back with three minutes to go, but Swarthmore scored with four seconds left and entered halftime up 8-2.
Swarthmore went scoreless in the third and the first half of the fourth quarter. Rhodes pulled within two goals, 8-6, in the fourth, before Swarthmore's Marsh ended the Garnet scoring drought with 6:36 to go. Swarthmore added three more goals the rest of the way to wrap up the contest.
Swarthmore went 1-for-2 on man-up opportunities. The Garnet committed six penalties but killed five of them, including a two-minute penalty.
The Garnet return to action on Saturday at home against Drew University.
