Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Solid Defensive Effort Helps Garnet Best Bryn Mawr

BRYN MAWR, Pa.–A strong defensive showing and a healthy rebounding advantage helped propel the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 64-40 victory over the homestanding Bryn Mawr College Owls on Thursday, Feb. 9.

The Garnet limited the Owls to 26.8 percent shooting from the field and clamped down especially hard in the fourth quarter as they surrendered only three points. On the boards, Swarthmore amassed a 57-37 advantage and pulled down 28 offensive rebounds alone, which translated to 21 second-chance points on the evening. Swarthmore turned 27 Bryn Mawr turnovers into 19 points on the other end and blocked nine shots for a total of 19 in two games this week.

Lindsay O'Sullivan was 7-of-8 from the line and finished just shy of a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds. Elizabeth Stiles recorded 14 points and Hayley Raymond had nine with three blocks. Raina Williams grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out a pair of rejections in just 12 minutes of action.

The Garnet jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter before the Owls hit a pair of layups and a three to bring it within five. Abigail Posta sank two from the charity stripe and another BMC basket with 30 seconds remaining made it 18-13 after one. Raymond converted an and-one to start the second and O'Sullivan was 3-of-4 in the quarter for six points.

In the second half, the Owls momentarily reduced their deficit to single digits, but could not keep Swarthmore off the boards or the free throw line. The garnet closed out the win with a strong fourth quarter by limiting the hosts to a 1-of-11 mark from the field.

The women's basketball team will play its last home game and honor seniors Jordyn Bell and Maggie O'Neil when it hosts Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m.
