SWARTHMORE, Pa.–For three quarters, the Swarthmore College women's basketball was neck-and-neck with the visiting Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, but the Garnet were unable to sustain the momentum in the fourth and fell by an 80-63 score.
Prior to the game, Swarthmore honored its two seniors,
Jordyn Bell and
Maggie O'Neil for their contributions over four years.
Three players finished in double figures as
Abigail Pirron led the way with 15,
Audra Woodside scored 14 and
Bridget Scott came off the bench to chip in 11.
Elizabeth Stiles contributed four assists and
Lindsay O'Sullivan had four steals.
After failing behind 23-12 after one quarter, the Garnet came alive in the second and put 20 on the board, with six apiece coming from Pirron and O'Sullivan. Trailing 32-22, Swarthmore put together an 8-0 run to make it a one possession game. Two free throws by Pirron made it 33-32 in favor of the Jays, who scored the last two points of the half to take a three-point margin into the locker rooms.
Both teams traded baskets in the third before Hopkins converted a layup with 22 seconds remaining and led 49-45 heading into the fourth. Baskets by Pirron and
Hayley Raymond tied the game up and forced a timeout from the Hopkins bench. The visitors took advantage of the break to collect themselves and responded by scoring 29 of the next 35 points to put the game out of reach.
Swarthmore hits the road for a rivalry game against Haverford on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m.
