Garnet Softball Edged Late at Del Val; Darkness Erases Game Two

DOYLESTOWN, Pa.–Playing on the road at Delaware Valley, the Swarthmore College softball team was narrowly defeated by a 2-1 score on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Swarthmore led 5-0 after four frames in the nightcap before the game was called due to darkness. The Garnet had scored all of its runs in the first two innings and pitcher Mary Olesnavich had allowed only two hits in the circle. Per NCAA rules, the contest and all individual and team statistics do not enter the official record since five innings were not completed.

In game one, the homestanding Aggies put a run on the board in the first inning and kept the Garnet offense at bay until the sixth. Sophomore Hannah Thompson laid down a bunt single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by freshman Gabriella Natoli. Rookie Marisa Mancini drove in the game-tying run with a double to left center, but was stranded at third by the end of the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, the Aggies retook the lead on a two-out double down the left field line. Swarthmore threatened to knot the game up in the seventh as Kalli Segel led off with a hit by pitch and was replaced by pinch runner Emily Barranca. Barranca got to second on Elizabeth Curcio's sac bunt and made it to third after a fielding miscue. The Garnet, however, could not bring her around and fell to 0-3 on the year.

Swarthmore resumes competition in Fort Myers on Sunday, March 5 when it plays Albion College at 3 p.m.
