Garnet Sweep First Day Of Spring Break

FORT MYERS, Fla.—Swarthmore College opened its 2017 Spring Break schedule with a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon. The Garnet knocked off Albion College in six innings 8-0 and then took care of Rockport University 8-2 in the nightcap. Swarthmore posted 31 hits in the doubleheader.

GAME ONE: Albion 0, Swarthmore 8
Emily Bowman dominated in the circle, striking out nine Albion batters in the shutout. Bowman only conceded two hits and three walks in the win.

Freshman Marisa Mancini knocked in four runs on a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Mancini had the walk-off hit in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a single to right field with the bases loaded that plated freshmen Alex Marsh and Kennedy Kings. The runs gave Swarthmore the eight-run advantage and the sudden victory.

Freshmen Emilie Morse and Kennedy Kings posted multi-hit games, as did senior Anna Jensen.

Swarthmore got on the board in the first frame, with a Mancini RBI-single and then an RBI ground out from Elizabeth Curcio. In the third, Jensen singled up the middle to score Curcio. Emily Barranca added another run with a bases-loaded infield single.

Mancini and Morse added RBIs in the fifth with rips to the outfield, and the Garnet capitalized on another bases-loaded situation in the sixth when Mancini smacked the walk-off hit.

GAME TWO: Rockford 2, Swarthmore 8
McKenzie Ward picked up the win in the circle in Swarthmore's second game of the day, pitching four innings, walking two, while allowing four hits and striking out one. Frankie Ponziani pitched three innings in relief to earn the save.

Hannah Thompson, batting lead off, went 4-for-5 from the plate. Thompson got the one-handed bunt down to an art form on Sunday, recording all four of her hits via the bunt. Thompson also swiped three bases and scored twice in the win.

Kennedy Kings went a perfect 3-for-3 from the dish, scoring once and driving in one. Sara Planthaber went 2-for-4, recording RBIs on both hits. Planthaber smacked an RBI-triple in the second and then scored on an illegal pitch. She added an RBI-single with the bases-loaded in the third. Kalli Segel and Gabriella Natoli added a pair of hits as well. Segel doubled in the second to score Emilie Morse, capping off back-to-back three-run innings for the Garnet. Natoli doubled in the fourth to bring home Kings, bumping Swarthmore's lead to 8-2.

Swarthmore returns to action on Monday at 9 a.m. against Pitt-Bradford and then faces Geneva College at 11 a.m.
