SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Softball opened the 2017 season with a home doubleheader against the Wesley College Wolverines on Sunday. The Garnet fell in the opener 6-3 and then 14-5 in game two.
All six of Swarthmore's freshmen played on Sunday, making some significant contributions. Rookie
Kennedy Kings smashed a solo home run to left field in the second game and went 3-for-6 on the day.
Emilie Morse and
Kalli Segel both went 2-for-3 in game two, and Morse batted in four RBIs.
Swarthmore collected seven hits in game one and added 11 more in the nightcap.
The Garnet pitched by committee in both games.
Frankie Ponziani,
Mary Olesnavich and
McKenzie Ward each recorded a pair of strikeouts from the circle.
Game One: Wesley 6, Swarthmore 3
The Garnet were the first on the scoreboard, plating
Marit Vike after she led off with a walk, stole second and later dashed home to beat the throw on a ground out.
In the third, the Garnet added two more runs with a two-RBI single from senior outfielder Sara Planthaber.
Wesley put four runs on the board in the fifth inning to take control of the contest.
Game Two: Wesley 14, Swarthmore 5
Swarthmore fell in five innings in game two after Wesley hung a seven on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.
The Garnet had played the Wolverines closely through the first four innings. After the Wolverines scored a run in the top of the first, Swarthmore matched with an RBI-single by Morse.
The Wolverines posted four runs in the second and Swarthmore followed with three in the bottom of the inning. Morse unloaded the bases with a double to the fence in left center.
Wesley added two more in the third, and Swarthmore countered with Kings' solo home run in the third.
Swarthmore trailed 7-5 going into the fifth, but struggled to record outs in the top of the inning and allowed seven runs in the frame.
Swarthmore returns to action on Tuesday at Delaware Valley University.
