SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse won its home opener on Saturday, topping the Widener University Pride 15-13. Swarthmore held a six-goal lead in the third quarter, but Widener kept things interesting with a string of four straight goals in the fourth.
Attackman Cam Marsh had his hand in nearly half of Swarthmore's goals, recording seven points on three goals and four assists. Griffin Johnston added two goals and two assists, Matt Johnson tallied a pair of goals and had a helper, and freshman Nathaniel Johns posted two goals as well. Ryan Mulvey, Eric Levin, Dylan Rittenhouse, Zander Levitz, Jake Ross and Mark Hergenroeder all scored as well.
At the faceoff x, senior Stephen Ducey gave Widener fits, winning 18-of-23 draws. He corralled seven ground balls, one shy of Levin's team-high eight.
In net, Cole Fox registered 10 saves for his second win of the season.
The Garnet found the back of the net quickly as Rittenhouse scored in the first minute and change of the game. Later in the quarter, the Garnet held a 3-2 lead and then closed out the final four minutes on a 3-0 run. Levin netted a long-pole goal with 3:43 to play and then Ryan Mulvey scored a cheeky goal, finishing a low scoop near post with 16 seconds left in the quarter. The Garnet got one more nine seconds later on the first of Marsh's three goals.
Swarthmore notched a run of four straight goals in the second, including two man-up scores. The Garnet again scored a late goal as Levitz dropped in a goal with 17 seconds left. However, Widener capitalized with three seconds to go to pull within five by halftime.
After a pair of Widener goals in the third, Swarthmore followed with goals by Johns, Johnson and Johnston to up the lead to 14-8 with 3:37 remaining in the third quarter. Widener rallied for four straight goals in the fourth, but Ross' goal with 4:08 remaining discouraged any Widener comeback attempt.
The Garnet are back at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Vassar College.
