READING, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse started off the 2017 campaign the right way, earning a 15-14 road win at Albright College Saturday afternoon.
With temperatures in the high 60s for the season opener, the Garnet got it going early, tallying five goals in the first quarter and holding an 8-6 lead at halftime. The teams both posted four goals in the third and had an even fourth quarter save for an Albright tally with one second remaining.
Sophomore
Dylan Rittenhouse led the Garnet with four goals, one in each quarter, including the Garnet's first goal of 2017. Junior attackman
Cam Marsh netted a hat trick as did rookie
Nathaniel Johns. Marsh and Johns were also successful at setting up their teammates to score with Marsh recording three assists and Johns two more. Freshman
Zander Levitz recorded a pair of goals to go along with an assist. Matt Johnston and
Griffin Johnston added a goal, as did freshman
Austin Chang, the first of his collegiate career.
Four of Swarthmore's goals came on extra-man opportunities as the Garnet were a perfect 4-for-4 in man-up situations. The Garnet committed four penalties, conceding two man-up goals.

Cole Fox recorded nine saves in the win. The Garnet defense forced four Albright turnovers with freshman
Jack Belluche recording two.
Swarthmore captured 18-of-29 faceoffs. Senior
Stephen Ducey won 13-of-23 and freshman
Andrew Choe was 5-for-6.
The Garnet scored first on Saturday when Rittenhouse found the back of the net with 13:37 to go in the first. They fell behind 3-2 with 3:42 left in the first but rallied for three more goals before the period ended. Johns snuck in his second goal of the period right at the first-quarter buzzer.
Swarthmore's run stretched to 4-0 with Marsh's goal at 12:36 in the second, extending Swarthmore's lead to 6-3. Albright tagged a goal right before the end of the half and then led off the third quarter with three straight to overtake the Garnet 9-8.
Playing from behind for the first time in the game, the Garnet caught the Lions at 9-9 and 10-10 and then scored the next two goals to head into the fourth up 12-10.
Albright caught Swarthmore at 13-13 in the fourth. Fox came up with a big save in a one-on-one situation to keep the score knotted at 13.
Chang netted the go-ahead goal with 6:16 to play off an assist from Marsh. Marsh set up Johnston five minutes later for the insurance goal, making it 15-13. That goal turned out to be crucial as Albright scored with one second left in regulation.
Swarthmore (1-0) returns to the field next Saturday to host Widener University at 1 p.m.
