SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 14 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball won a back-and-forth battle with the Ursinus College Bears on Wednesday evening 67-60.
The lead changed hands nine times in the contest and the score was knotted up on eight different occasions.
Zac O'Dell and
Zack Yonda both pitched in 13 points in the win. O'Dell went 5-for-10 from the floor, grabbed six rebounds and had three blocked shots and two steals.
Conor Harkins made his first four 3-pointers for a 12-point night.
The Garnet shot 39.3 percent from the floor while the visitors posted a 43.3 percent rate. However, the Bears only made 5-of-16 3-pointers while Swarthmore made 10-of-26 attempts from beyond the arc.
Ursinus scored 38 of their points in the paint while Swarthmore score 20 inside.
Swarthmore one of the top rebounding teams in the country, edged Ursinus on the boards 35-34.
The Garnet trailed by as many as six points in the first period. With 3:02 to play in the half, the visitor lead stood at four points.
Jim Lammers cut the deficit to two points by beating his defender on the win and darting to the hoop for a layup.
Abass Sallah knocked down a jump shot with 1:40 left in the period to even the count at 33-33.
The Garnet pulled ahead early in the second and led by five with 16:10 to go on an O'Dell 3-pointer from the top of the arc.
Ursinus would tie the game twice more, but an O'Dell jumper with 10:12 to go gave the Garnet the lead for good. Swarthmore's held onto a lead of one or two baskets for the nine minutes and stretched to a three-possession game in the final minute as Ursinus began to foul to stop the clock.
A remarkably low number of fouls were called in Wednesday's contest, 23 in all. The Bears went 3-for-3 from the free throw line and the Garnet went 9-for-11. Swarthmore 6-for-6 from the line in the final 28 seconds of play.
The Garnet have a pair of road non-conference games to close out the 2017 fall semester. They play at Delaware Valley University on Saturday and at York College of PA on Dec. 13.
