SWARTHMORE, Pa.–For the second consecutive weekend, the Swarthmore College volleyball won its home quad tournament in perfect fashion.
The Garnet beat Neumann and Eastern by 3-0 scores on Saturday, Oct. 7 and have not dropped a set in their last seven matches. Swarthmore also kept its sterling 8-0 home record intact with the wins.
Senior setter
Malia Scott received MVP honors and
Mehra den Braven landed on the All-Tournament Team for the second straight weekend.
The team opened against Neumann with a 25-11, 25-19, 28-26 victory. Den Braven led all players with 17 kills and completed a double-double with 16 digs.
Sarah Girard record 17 in the latter category and Scott passed out 29 assists to go with 12 digs.
Swarthmore set the tone in the first set by hitting .480 and taking the first six points. Den Braven and
Emma Morgan-Bennett combined for 10 kills in the frame against the overmatched defense of Neumann. In the second, the teams traded runs, but the Garnet had the more significant streak, a 7-0 run on
Alice Liu's serve that broke the set open.
Swarthmore opened its lineup in the third with 13 different players seeing action. Den Braven paced the offense with seven kills and the Garnet managed to fend off a feisty Neumann run which saved four match points and tied the set at 24 apiece. After some back and forth, Swarthmore closed it out with consecutive kills from den Braven.
In the de facto championship match of the tournament, Swarthmore took down perennial powerhouse Eastern in convincing fashion in a 25-15, 28-26, 25-18 triumph. In the first, the team recovered from an early Eastern run and turned the tables with six consecutive points, punctuated by a
Malia Scott ace.
Sarah Wallace returned to the court with five kills and no errors in 10 attempts during the first as Swarthmore hit .225 as a team.
The Garnet came out firing on all cylinders in the second by posting a .405 attack percentage, led by
Malia Scott's setting and eight kills from den Braven. Eastern answered with an improved attack and the second frame featured a whopping 20 ties and seven lead changes. Neither team conceded much in the set, which was highlighted by an exciting rally at 16-15 courtesy of a reflexive dig by Girard. Eastern held on to a late lead at 24-23, but two Swarthmore points staved off a tie game. Swarthmore would eventually move ahead 2-0 behind kills from Wallace and den Braven.
In the third,
Alice Liu stepped up with three kills and Swarthmore limited the Eagles to a .111 clip. Wallace and Girard combined for 10 digs in the frame as the Garnet defense prevented any comeback attempts from reaching fruition.
Swarthmore hosts Bryn Mawr College for a Centennial Conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
