SWARTHMORE, Pa.–A goal by
Sophie Peipher late in regulation allowed the Swarthmore College field hockey team to force overtime against the Oneonta Red Dragons, but the Garnet ultimately suffered a 2-1 setback in the extra period.
Peipher found the back of the net in the 65th minute by dribbling along the endline and tapping the ball past the goalie. In overtime, Swarthmore nearly came away with the golden goal win behind a shot from
Ali Baratta before a last-second stop by the Oneonta defender prevented the ball from crossing the line.
The Red Dragons took an early lead and controlled the flow of the game for most of the first half. Swarthmore earned a string of penalty corners in the final minutes of the period, but were unable to find the equalizer.
Zelda Bank made seven saves in the second half to keep Swarthmore within striking distance, which they achieved with Peipher's fourth goal of the season.
Swarthmore held a 14-13 advantage in penalty corners, despite trailing 5-13 in shots toward goal. The team resumes Centennial Conference competition when it welcomes Bryn Mawr and its head coach Victor Brady '13 for a 4 p.m. showdown on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
