SWARTHMORE, Pa.–An early goal by
Sophie Peipher and nervy defending led the Swarthmore College field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Bryn Mawr on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
Peipher found the back of the net in the 10th minute play, burying the eventual game-winner.
Riya Garg connected with
Clare Perez from the corner and Perez ripped a shot that was deflected into goal by Peipher in front. Garg spent the afternoon sending hard shots toward the Bryn Mawr keeper and finished with four on goal.
Swarthmore kept the pressure on in the first in search of an insurance goal and earned a series of penalty corners, but could not convert.
Zelda Bank was called into action to make one save in the first half and denied four more in the second to preserve Swarthmore's lead.
With just over 90 seconds remaining in the game, Bryn Mawr made the unorthodox move of pulling its goalie to gain an additional attacker as it sought an equalizer. The Owls earned a corner shortly after, but were unable to force an additional period and remain in search of their first conference win. Swarthmore held an 18-10 advantage in shots and a large 19-8 margin in penalty corners.
The team travels to Baltimore on Saturday, Oct. 14 to play Johns Hopkins at 1 p.m.
